Dear RSU 67 Families, Parents, Staff, and Community Members,
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Cierra McCain, an incoming senior at Mattanawcook
Academy, passed away early this morning as a result of a car accident. Our sincere condolences are offered to Cierra's family and friends at this difficult time. During this time in which our community processes this news and copes with grief, the district will offer counseling and bereavement support to all students and staff.
The cafeteria at Mattanawcook Academy will be open on Monday, August 7th from 3 to 6 PM for any students who want to gather. School counselors will be available at that time for students or staff members who may need or want support surrounding this loss.
The death of a student can be difficult to process, especially for children. In this regard, we encourage you to listen carefully to your child and to answer any questions they have openly and honestly. Accepting and validating their feelings is important.
In the days ahead, you may find it helpful for your child to discuss his/her feelings. If you feel your child needs to speak to a school counselor or other caring adult, please do not hesitate to contact your child's school for assistance.
Our deepest sympathy to the entire family.
Sincerely,
Paul Austin
Superintendent of Schools
