Dear RSU No. 67 Families, Staff, and Community Members,

Today, Monday, October 21, 2024, an older gentleman entered Mattanawcook Academy to request information about services we provided to a relative.  Upon entering the office, Principal Arsenault noticed something that looked like the butt of a gun being carried near his belt.  Per our emergency protocol, Principal Arsenault immediately alerted our School Resource Officer, and the man was escorted out of the building without incident.  The man was not threatening and we do not believe he was a danger to students or staff.  However, the man was carrying a weapon that is not allowed on school property.  As such, the police are investigating the incident and the man will not be allowed on RSU No. 67 property in the future.

Even though Maine is an “Open Carry” state, it is important to remember that weapons are never allowed on school property.  We are thankful for the observant and quick actions of our administration and the School Resource officer. Mattanawcook Academy administration is working collaboratively with the Lincoln Police Department to conduct a thorough investigation.

We do understand that this incident may be alarming to students, families, community members, and staff.  If you or someone you know needs to speak to someone about your concerns, please reach out to the school administration or the Lincoln Police Department for assistance.

Mark Leonard, Chief of Police, Lincoln, Maine

Paul Austin, Superintendent of Schools, RSU No. 67
