Dear RSU No. 67 Families and Staff,

I am writing to update you on today’s events involving Mattanawcook Junior High School.  Unfortunately, we discovered a threat at MJHS today, our second in three days.  We immediately activated our emergency management plan and we safely evacuated all students and staff members in accordance with that plan.  Shortly after 11:30 this morning, local and state police deemed that the building was safe and that students and staff could return to the school for the remainder of the day.

Our teachers, support staff, administrators, bus drivers, school nutrition staff, and law enforcement did an outstanding job today in managing the situation. I am thankful for the care and comfort everyone gave to our students.  I know that threats cause fear and concern in the schools, for families, and across the community, and I understand your frustration.  I can assure you that we will continue to work closely with local law enforcement to investigate the origins of the threat(s), and we will work diligently to find and hold accountable all responsible individuals.  The safety and well-being of our students and staff continue to be our number one priority, and we thank you for your continued support in that regard.

Mattanawcook Junior High School has been reopened and all after-school activities will go on as planned.  School will be in session tomorrow.  I thank the parents, staff, and community for your continued support, and I know that with your help, we can help make RSU No. 67 schools safe, secure, and welcoming for all.

Sincerely,

Paul Austin, Superintendent
